A Chinese envoy is reported to be in Ukraine as part of a European trip Beijing wants to use to bolster President Xi Jinping’s credentials as a global peacemaker. It’s not clear if he’ll actually meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
The tour’s happening ahead of the annual Group of Seven this week where Russia’s invasion will be in focus. Talks for exporting Ukraine’s grain continue as the Kremlin threatens to exit the pact later this week.
On the ground, Ukraine’s forces advanced in the suburbs around the eastern city of Bakhmut in heavy fighting Tuesday, even as Russian troops aided by artillery and reinforcements pressed ahead in the city itself.
