Ad-Free Twitch Turbo Gets Price Hike

Live-streaming platform Twitch is raising the monthly price of its ad-free monthly subscription service Turbo from $8.99 to $11.99 in the US.

Twitch has changed its pricing for Turbo across the globe; it published a full country-by-country breakdown on its help site. Current Turbo members will get a three-month grace period before the price hike hits, Twitch said in an email to users. It won't automatically renew at the new price, though; you'll need to opt in before the three months is up, or your subscription will be halted.

As The Verge notes, subscriptions in some countries are getting a price cut. To take advantage of that, though, you'll need to cancel your subscription and resubscribe.

Current Turbo subscribers are not happy. On the r/Twitch subreddit, users roundly attacked the move, with one saying: “Yea no thanks. I paid for turbo because it was relatively cheap and worked 99% of the time. A casual 60% price increase in my region. No thanks I’ll go back to adblocking and throwing a couple of dollars at the streamers I watch each month."

Aside from offering an ad-free experience, Turbo gives subscribers more emojis, custom chat username colors, and added broadcast storage. In the price-hike email, Twitch says “more updates [are] on the way for Turbo to make it even better and more relevant to our community.”

Amazon-owned Twitch recently gained a new CEO after co-founder Emmett Shear stepped down in March after 16 years at the helm of the company. The price hike also comes after Amazon embarked on a series of mass layoffs so far this year.
